Most of us have heard the theory of evolution, that all life on Earth is descended from a single universal ancestor that lived approximately 3.8 billion years ago. This theory purports that we share ancestry with monkeys and that the world was not created. Did you know that the father of evolutionary theory, Charles Darwin, is buried in a church? He is actually buried in Westminster Abbey in London. Yes, Charles Darwin, who denied his Christian faith, and whose ideas have done tremendous damage to the faith of millions, is buried in a church. Rather ironic isn’t it?
Why do I share this sad, but relatively meaningless piece of trivia? Because it can serve as a reminder to us how misguided ideology and even sinful corruption can still easily enter our churches and homes if we do not stay true to the Bible and view it as intended, to be taken literally, as God’s direct Word. We must look at the Creation account as being true and accurate from the 7 days of creation to how man and woman were formed by God’s hands. As Genesis 2:7 says, “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” We ARE uniquely created, specifically by God and brought to life with his very breathe. Even beyond the Creation account, all of the Bible must be viewed literally as God’s Word. Many people, and yes sadly some churches, enter extremely risky territory when they chose to reject even just a part of God’s Word in the Bible. Proverbs 30:5-6 state, “Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.”
Some people today believe that not all of the Bible applies to today’s culture and doesn’t make sense anymore due to humanities greater enlightenment and understanding. However, if it is okay to pick and chose what parts of the Bible we want to believe or accept as true, who makes those decisions? If it is up to each person individually, we could have 6 billion interpretations in the world. However, there is only one choice, to believe it all, exactly as God intended and had it written. Do not add nor subtract from it. Do not stretch 7 days into 3.8 billion years. Do not mix God’s creations, monkeys are not people nor are people monkeys. And we must take literally the things God asks of us and tells us. Get into his Word today and learn directly what the Lord wants us to know. He left us with the most valuable tool in the world, the Bible, and that is where we learn that he will indeed one day return. As we celebrated Christ’s birth at Christmas, we will soon celebrate his defeat of sin at the cross and resurrection at Easter. This Lenten and Easter season, I encourage you to take time again to get into his Word. Resurrect your Bible study habits and make sure as you read, you remember that every word you read is there because God meant it to be.
